Laurence Bach

BFA in Photography, Philadelphia College of Art (UArts); graduate study, Basel School of Design, Switzerland.

Laurence Bach's work has been exhibited in Thirty Years of Poster Art at the Gewerbemuseum Basel, and he has won awards from the American Institute of Graphics Arts and the Art Directors Club of Philadelphia. Mr. Bach's photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums in London, Athens, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York. His work has been published in Aperture, Graphis, Typographishe Monatsblatter and Two Centuries of American Art. He is a practicing photographer and designer in the Philadelphia area.

Laurence Bach was the chairman of the Graphic Design Department from 1985 to 1992. He currently teaches sophomore Design Systems, junior Communications Studio, and the elective Photographics.

The Photographic Archive

This archive begins in 1970 and chronicles 12 portfolios of photographs I have taken over a 30-year period. The drive to create pictures which are both narrative in content and visually striking, began much before this date but did not come to fruition until I found myself living and working on the island of Paros in the Aegean, where I taught photography at The Aegean School of Fine Arts. In addition to absorbing the island’s ancient and modern history, I also had the chance to observe archaeological excavations, their organization and methodical exploration, which stimulated my sense of design and story telling. Much has been written about the Greek light, which is even more intense as it bounces off the white washed buildings and the glitter of the sea. One summer lead to another and one portfolio, with its own voice lead to another, influenced by the people I met, the language and the customs of the relatively remote villages that dot the hinterland of this little island. The summers were spent sketching plans for pictures and then shooting the ideas on an almost daily basis.  While winters, back in the States, were spent assembling, printing and magically bringing these ideas to life.  Both processes were both painful and joyous but necessary in the process of giving myself an identity and a voice.

Each portfolio has a story, a group of characters and events that may never be written about and will be left for the viewer to interpret. I read the pictures like a diary of a long and wonderful period in my life. Some I do not remember making, others stick with me like a dream I cannot shake.
